At a recent Board meeting in Winnipeg the Canadian Kennel Club announced that it was once more facing a financial crisis. Registrations and Dog Show entries were down considerably in 2009 and these are main sources of CKC income. In an effort to raise revenue the CKC imposed a surcharge of foreign dogs at shows but due to the outcry from the Clubs this was quickly rescinded. The request that each show giving clubs donate one thousand dollars to the CKC was rejected by the clubs who themselves are feeling financial pain.
When addressing a meeting of Judges on 7th April 2010 Director Brian Taylor stated that unless revenue was found before June the CKC was facing the prospect of going into receivership.
The response of the membership has been one of anger at what is perceived as mismanagement in a number of areas. The unnecessary move of the offices to more expensive quarters and the failure to take remedial action as the problem became apparent are causes for discontent. The Bylaws of the Club are so framed that the CEO has almost unlimited authority with the Board either helpless or unwilling to intervene.
Layoffs of staff have occurred with more likely. Even so the CKC faces an uncertain future and the possibility of the Federal Government having to step in is not out of the question.
